Archadeck Engineering Expertise Creates Safer Screened Porch Design

These North Macon homeowners may never know just how fortunate they were when they hired Archadeck of Central Georgia to build their screened porch. Because they chose Archadeck, a professional design-and-build firm with the resources of a full engineering department, they avoided disaster.

Before Archadeck began the project.

We don’t mean to sound overly dramatic, but a less skilled, less experienced builder would not have handled this situation correctly. This home in Jones County, GA, was built with a portion of the second story cantilevered over the first story. That means there is an overhang at the back of the house where the second story protrudes over the first story by 2 ft. In this case, the cantilevered portion of the home stuck out over the back door and the deck.

The clients wanted to convert their deck to a screened porch. Most screened porch contractors would have attached the porch roof to the second-story cantilever. That would have been a huge mistake. The cantilevered edge of the home’s second story was not designed to support any more weight than it was already carrying.

First Contact: Homeowners Add Portico to North Macon Home

Our clients purchased this home in the Tumbling Shoals subdivision of North Macon, GA, two years ago. They wanted to add a portico over the front door, and they consulted with Archadeck of Central Georgia about the project. As it turned out, they also wanted to remodel parts of the home’s interior, and they allowed their remodelers to build the portico on the front of the home.

Second Contact: Homeowners Hire Archadeck to Design and Build Screened Porch

The clients also wanted to convert their deck to a screened porch, but not right away. When they were ready to move forward with the screened porch project, this time they didn’t call the remodelers. While they had been relatively satisfied with their portico, they weren’t thrilled enough to hire the remodelers for another outdoor living project. They called screened porch designer and builder Archadeck of Central Georgia instead—and you can bet they’re glad they made that very wise decision.

Archadeck of Central Georgia is a local Macon and Warner Robins, GA, builder with headquarters in Richmond, VA. Archadeck locations across the country rely on the professional engineering and architectural drafting expertise of the Richmond office. They produce our architectural drawings, and we are able to consult with their engineers if we encounter an especially complex design issue. Most local builders will not have access to that level of professional resources.

The Archadeck engineers confirmed our suspicion that this home’s cantilevered second story could not carry the load of a screened porch addition. The typical porch roof tie-in would have created a nightmare for these homeowners.

Screened Porch Designer Archadeck of Central GA Surpasses Expectations

With our engineered drawings for a porch design that would not destroy the home, we got to work. We built the screened porch and deck extension these homeowners had waited two years to enjoy. To distribute the load of the porch properly, we used an LVL beam (laminated veneer lumber) from one end of the porch to the other. The posts supporting the porch’s shed roof go down to the footings on either side. All the load of the porch is transferred to the concrete footings in the ground instead of to the cantilever. Even if the home blew down, the porch would still be standing.

Project details

With a deck to screened porch conversion—or with a deck replacement, for that matter—clients have an opportunity to make significant design changes. For example, these North Macon homeowners could have kept the porch dimensions to the same footprint as their deck. Instead, they decided to extend the footprint to make the area a little longer than the original.

The new extension is not enclosed or screened, and it functions as a landing that leads from the porch to the garage. Garage access from the porch was high on the homeowners’ list of priorities. The open area of the landing has room for the clients’ grill. It also gives the clients an area where they can sit and soak up the sun when it’s not too hot outdoors. Finally, the new stairs open off of the landing, providing easy access from porch to back yard and garage to back yard, too.

Now the homeowners can enjoy their time outdoors without pesky insects invading their space. The porch roof will provide protection from rain showers, as well. One of the amenities they chose to integrate in to their porch design was an outdoor fireplace with a gas starter. We’re pretty sure they would tell you this screened porch was worth the wait.

Playing with Fire Safely on Your Warner Robins Central GA Deck or Patio

Warner Robins GA firepitAs the weather moves from winter to spring, we are anxiously awaiting spending time on our decks and patios. Although it’s hot as blazes during the summer here in Central GA, fire features continue to be tremendously popular. We actually receive requests for fire features year round, probably because they’re not just about fire. What’s one of the quintessential memories of childhood? How about the memory of roasting marshmallows over an open flame on a hot summer’s night. Fire pits have many uses, only one of which is heat.

As builders of custom fire features, we are often asked, “Can we safely have a fire pit as a part of our deck or patio?” The answer is, “Yes! Absolutely!” There are; however, some safety considerations to bear in mind.

Do you want a fire pit that is permanent or removable?

All fire elements come in a wide range of styles and options. How you plan on using them is key. On one side of the outdoor fire spectrum, you have pre-fab kits, both wood burning and gas, that can either be permanent or removable. Opposite pre-fab are custom built fire structures that can be tailored to meet your family’s specific needs. If you are not going to use your fire feature very often, or if you are only planning on being in your home for a short time before you relocate, then it would probably be wise to simply purchase a movable fire pit from one of your local big-box stores and install it yourself. However, if you love a natural fire, find the beauty of flame alluring year round, and can see enjoying it as a fun activity for many seasons, then considering a more permanent, custom fire structure is certainly worth investigating.

Additional options to consider are size, shape, and the fire’s fuel. Traditionally, wood burning fire pits are either square, round or rectangle in shape. For a more modern take on outdoor fire pits, natural gas structures can be constructed into any configuration, including curves and non-traditional widths. Natural gas fire elements can also be incorporated as an outdoor lighting element for year round entertainment. As such, they can incorporate a variety of fillers, from standard lava rocks to exotic glass beads and “gemstones” which come in a range of colors and styles.

Decking Choices and Fire

porch fireplace Macon Warner Robins GARegardless of whether you decide to use a permanent or removable fire pit, your decking choices also have to be considered with your installation, not only for safety, but also for the care and maintenance of your deck or patio. Fire pits do not come with screens and if they are wood burning, can “spit” hot embers. So, you will always want to supervise a live fire, especially one with wood, sticks, leaves, and other organic timber. If you have a deck built with low-maintenance composite timbers, such as TimberTech® or Fiberon, you will need to use extra care to ensure that burning coals do not escape, because they will immediately begin to burn and mar the surface, which is very costly and sometimes impossible to easily replace. A well-qualified builder will plan for the use of stone or other hardscape elements into the design and surround of your fire pit, so that this is not an issue. Stone decks and patios are regarded as spark resistant. Remember, with all fire: before you leave, make certain that the fire is out!

Fire Pits vs Outdoor Fireplaces

For several years, we have continued to see in Central GA a rise in requests for outdoor fireplaces. Whether you choose a fire pit or a fireplace is completely up to your budget and needs. For cost-savings, most homeowners choose ventless fireplaces. There are many factors to consider with outdoor fireplaces, including the materials used and proximity to your home. Generally, outdoor fireplaces are at the top-of-the-line in materials and cost when it comes to adding a fire feature to your home.

The cool crisp outdoors, a screen porch, a crackling fire, and the smell of burning wood – or… there’s another option for your Central GA outdoor fireplace

Macon GA screened porch with fireplaceOutdoor fireplaces are becoming more and more popular. Who can resist the idea of, well, the title of this blog? just like you’d never see a home built without a fireplace, in many areas, outdoor fireplaces are becoming the staple on new screened porches. One hundred years ago, or even 50 years ago, people would have never imagined a fireplace that burned anything but real wood. These days, there are other great options. In fact, likely the greater percentage of indoor fireplaces built are gas fireplaces. If you’re having a new porch with outdoor fireplace built for you, the type of fireplace is your choice and it’s not always an easy choice. Customers often ask us for advice about whether wood burning or gas burning is the best fireplace for a new porch. Here are some of the things we tell them.

  • How important is the sound of a crackling fire to you?
  • Do you want to use your fireplace on week nights?
  • Do you want to be able to start the fire in minutes or are you willing to spend the time lighting the fire?
  • Do you want to see and hear the burning logs fall?

porch fireplace Macon Warner Robins GAA wood burning fireplace is more expensive. But, there’s nothing that smells like a wood burning fire except a wood burning fire. There’s nothing that sounds like a wood burning fire except a wood burning fire. If you love watching over a fire in your fireplace including the tasks of stoking the fire and getting more wood when necessary, you can only do this with a wood burning fireplace. But, if you’ve ever watched and waited for a fire to extinguish at the end of an evening, you know that care and attention needs to be paid to ensure the fire is out. For this reason, you’re probably unlikely to use the fireplace on work nights.

Enter the gas fireplace. Flip a switch and it’s burning. Too hot? Turn the dial and the fire burns cooler. Ready to turn in for the evening? Just flip the same switch. If desired, you can even get a remote for your fireplace to make adjustments at any time. Less expensive? Yep. You can probably see the tradeoffs here. A porch is something you will use for many years to come so it’s important to make your decision not based on how you want to use your porch over the next year, but on how you want to use your porch for the next 5 or 10 years or longer.

Whether you choose a wood burning or gas fireplace, the rest of the design options are up to you. You can choose the veneer, whether you have a hearth, and choose if you want a TV mounted above the fireplace. The great thing about working with a custom builder is they will design each component of your new outdoor space to your liking.
