Archadeck of Central Georgia just completed this stunning covered porch addition in Warner Robins, just off Hwy. 96 in the Brantley Subdivision. In their quest to add more shade and function to their existing raised concrete patio, the homeowners reached out to us for the best advice.
Initially, they were considering the notion of adding a pergola over top the patio. However, since the footings were already poured, we offered the second option of a porch cover, since it would be more advantageous for delivering shade and protection from inclement weather.
Archadeck of Central Georgia used beefy columns for the addition to complement the architecture of the existing home. To compensate for the two 2nd story windows just above the addition, we designed an almost flat, shed roof. The roof is built using a modified bitumen rolled roof which we carefully matched to the home’s existing color shingle. The result is a porch cover that appears to have always been part of the original home.
Patio covers, such as this one, might just be the greatest thing to happen to outdoor living since patio furniture or the advent of the backyard grill! This addition is perfect for porch parties and backyard barbecues. Our most recent redecking project takes us to the amazing golf course community of Stathams Landing in Warner Robins.
This neighborhood is situated on the public Landings Golf Club, which has an expansive clubhouse, a 27-hole course, and the largest putting green in middle GA. The home where our project took place backs up to the golf course itself.
The homeowners had an existing wooden deck with many boards in bad shape. The style of the deck was also quite dated with built-in seating instead of railing. This was typical of the period in which it was originally built.
Our goal was to bring the design of the deck up-to-date, bringing it up to current deck construction codes and open up the view. In addition to modernizing the space, we also utilized low maintenance materials. This will allow the homeowners to focus on enjoying the deck without the constant worry of maintenance.
Archadeck of Central GA was able to keep and use the original deck’s framing on this project. We reworked the beams in order to accommodate for the continued integration of the beautiful trees in the landscape. We removed the bench seating, added wider stairs and added railing to one end according to code.
The new decking boards are Fiberon and the railing is Fortress iron panels. We also finished the entire deck to have no wood peeking out with white PVC risers and edge band.

Take a look at this new deck in Perry GA. At first glance, you may notice the unique railing configuration that allows an open Zen-like feel as the family traverses from the back door, onto the deck and into the backyard. This may be an option for your new deck depending on the height of the deck and the building code in your local jurisdiction. Waterfront living is something many Central GA residents only dream about. Whether it is a permanent home on the water, or a second home used for weekends and getaways, owning waterfront property is overflowing with benefits. Having a dock or pier that allow extended enjoyment of these benefits makes it even sweeter.
One of our most recent dock projects is located on Lake Wildwood in Macon. The neighborhood features an 186-acre lake, with easy access to swimming, boating and fishing. The lake is also stocked with bass and bream. Since most of the homes within Lake Wildwood are built around the lake itself, having access to all the lake has to offer is key to enhancing the area’s enjoyment.
The project consisted of building a new dock with access for parking the clients’ pontoon boat and installing cleats to tie the boat with a bumper all the way around. It is typical for this neighborhood to lower the water level on the lake every 3-4 years. This allows residents a chance to repair or refurbish their docks as it only possible to work on the foundations of the docks when the water is down. Archadeck of Central GA scheduled this project while the homeowners were out of town and able to get the project completed before the water level rose back up. As is the case with any dock project we do, it is crucial we have access to the footings. We do not have a way to drive new pylons.
The dock is built with TimberTech Terrain decking in brown oak. There are many advantages of using a low-maintenance material, such as TimberTech, for a dock addition. These include durable decking for high-traffic areas, resistance to mold and mildew growth and moisture damage. This decking is also texturized to retain the look of natural wood, the texture also aids in slip resistance.
The clients are elated with their new dock! They especially love the custom built-in benches. These were designed in a way to not obstruct the view but serve as an added safety measure to keep the children from falling off the end — not to mention a great seat for casting a line!

In addition to being the beginning of the summer season, May is nation Deck Safety Month. This is a good time to consider whether your deck is safe of whether it may be time to make some updates to make it safer or get your deck up to code.
Here are the top 6 things to inspect to determine whether your Central GA deck is safe for your family and guests as y’all spend a lot of time outdoors this summer. You’ll remember not too long ago when we posted the blog about the deck you see below. When those homeowners called us to replace their deck, it was obvious that the deck was unsafe since it moved when they stepped foot on it.
If your deck has structural issues, it may not be as apparent so we want to provide some things to inspect on your own.
Does the deck move?
Do the stairs move?
Does the railing move?
Are the support beams cracked or degrading?
Are nails or screws used as fasteners
When looking at the connection to your home, are bolts or nailed used to attach to your home?
The first 3 questions seem obvious. If your deck clearly and easily moves when you step on it, then it obviously is time for a new deck. And, it’s time to do that quickly. Just because your deck doesn’t easily move or sway when you step on it doesn’t mean that it’s safe. Here are a couple things to try to ensure deck safety.
Pick a couple spots on your deck and jump on those spots. You should not feel movement left to right or even up and down. If there is give in the boards as you jump up and down, the joists may not be close enough to meet code or to support the weight of the deck board. You shouldn’t feel any swaying nor give in the boards.
Then head over to the railing. Grab on with both hands and try to move it left to right as well as forward and back. Does it move? If your railing is attached correctly, it will not move when you push or pull on it. If you have movement, it’s time to call in an expert to diagnose whether there are some minor updates to secure the railing or whether the railing needs major updates to become safe and secure.
Next, move to your stairs. Stand squarely on a stair half way down, grab both railings and try to move from side to side. Neither your railings nor your stairs should have any movement side to side. Then, if you feel comfortably balanced, jump a couple times on an individual step and see if there is spring or give on any of the stairs themselves.
Take a look at the deck boards and how they are attached to each other and to the joists. Are nails or screws used to attach the decking boards? If you see evidence of nails being used instead of screws, there may be some vulnerability.
After checking out what can be seen from the deck, step around and under your deck. Take a look at the support beams. Are any of them cracked or twisted? Do you notice any evidence of infestation from termites? Are the supports solid and immovable? If you try to move a support post, do you see any give in the area where the post connects to the footing?
Finally, if you can walk under your deck to the area where the deck is attached to the house, take a look at the attachment. What hardware is used? Heavy duty bolts must be used to attach the deck to your home. If you see nails or even screws, your deck may be unsafe.

Re-decking is a popular option. This allows you to replace the decking boards. Many Central GA homeowners want to upgrade to low maintenance decking or railing. Most often we can upgrade the decking or railing utilizing the existing sub-structure. If there are some stability issues, we should be able to fix those issues at that time ensuring to bring your deck up to code.
Youth has a lot of things going for it, but there are some downsides too, even within the narrow topic of home ownership and improvement. We recently completed a paver patio in the Barrington Hall community. The couple is pretty young and doesn’t have any kids. One of the great things about being in a position like this is that you can invite a bunch of friends over for a cookout at a moment’s notice: “We’re going to pick up some food to put on the grill. Let’s meet up at our place at 6:30.”
Sounds great, right? Of course early in your career you might not exactly own your dream home. But some aspects of your home can be just like that dream home you are striving toward. And eventually if you stay long enough you may turn your house into that dream home. This couple had a deck that was in pretty bad shape and had a pergola that provided minimal sun protection. They wanted to renovate the space on a budget getting most of what they wanted without over investing for the neighborhood. During our meetings with them, we discussed what they need now, what their budget for the project was and what they think they might want down the road.
Rather than a new deck we recommended Belgard pavers to create a low maintenance, durable patio. In some instances a paver patio can be the same cost as a pressure treated deck and there is little maintenance with pavers. And when it’s time to sell or when it’s time to add on again the patio will look as nice as the day it was installed. The low seating wall gives the area some visual definition and there is always room for one more friend to drop by. Out of chairs? No problem! On the opposite side of the patio we installed posts for a hammock—this was high on their wish list.
Another aspect of being young is that you never know when you might get a job opportunity in another city. Rather than going “all in” on this project, our clients chose block styles–Holland Stone in Spice Blend and Weston Wall– that they can match later on if they want to extend the patio space. They think they might want to add a barbecue bump out in the coming years, but don’t know how long they will be in Macon. Always work with a builder who asks you about your needs today and tomorrow. These plans were designed with longevity and flexibility in mind. The patio looks finished, but can be easily extended.
One thing you might notice from the pictures is that the yard is fenced. We were able to pull down a section of the fence to bring in trucks to move the sand, rock, and the blocks. When we left, we reinstalled the fence and the owners saved on labor because the crew didn’t have to move all the materials by wheel barrow. This is a small detail, but can have a big impact on the final cost. Someone unfamiliar with carpentry and paver installation would not recognize this cost saving opportunity. Perhaps you have been thinking about adding a new outdoor living space for a while– maybe a really long while, but when you decide you want to get started you don’t want to wait. We have some clients who had been thinking about adding a deck to their home for 10 years, since they purchased the property in ‘04. They had the perfect spot for it: the house has three exterior doors that are at the same height. They had even taken out some trees to make way for the project. It took us just a little over a week to build it. The deck was completed so quickly they may still be surprised when they look out their window and see it.
The house was built in 1997 and has the look of a farmhouse; it’s in a very rural area between South Macon and Warner Robins, GA. Two of the exterior doors led to a patio and one was oriented to the garage. We built a very small roof, similar to a portico, to provide protection from the rain when using the door to the garage. The owners like the look of angled boards so we created a traditional Archadeck angled deck. Angled decks have superior stability and provide subtle visual cues between changes in elevation. They chose AZEK PVC decking in the Redland Rose color. AZEK is impervious to moisture and insects and has terrific durability.
The owners selected wooden rail posts with white metal pickets in Fortress Iron and AZEK decking for the rail caps. In the past, iron railings were often custom made in local shops, were expensive and took time to fabricate to order. Fortress offers the look of custom railings at a fraction of the cost. They are extremely durable and allow a superior view to the yard beyond. This will be especially desirable if the owners decide to add the pool they are considering in the future. The AZEK rail caps visually integrate the railing to the deck flooring.
The house also has a balcony above the deck. We built around the balcony supports; they remain undisturbed. Since the deck is low to the ground, we decided not to use skirting on this project. There are nice wide steps on the front which can be used for benches to enjoy the view. We are proud to be the Macon deck builder chosen to create this great area where this family can sit, entertain and eat outside. Instead of taking three steps from their home onto the ground, our clients now exit to a lovely outdoor living space designed to their specifications.

Families grow and change over time. The good news is that your outdoor living spaces can do the same. We recently had the opportunity to do a makeover on a multi-level deck which we originally built in 1992. We remembered working on this home because it was previously owned by the Allman Brothers. The framing was still in good shape, but the floor and railings had weathered over the last 22 years and the needs of the family had changed so we came over to consult on an upgrade/makeover.
The original deck had several levels that stylishly connected the home to the swimming pool. The kids were young the first go-around and getting them to and from the pool and having a good view of the water were the top design concerns at the time. This year the clients wanted to create a more relaxed, living room-type space looking out at the pool and surrounding woods. The house has log cabin construction that fits very naturally with the lot and we aimed to keep the refurbished deck consistent with that look. To that end, we will stain the wood areas to match the home.
We built the lowest level up to match the height of the largest existing section. This allows for plenty of space for eating and entertaining. There are now two eating areas with great flow between them for mingling or just moving about. Multiple deck levels are ideal for allowing either for multiple use or for breaking groups into different clusters: think teens at one table and adults at another.
The decks are surrounded by new, solid skirting with doors underneath, garnering the family ample, secure outdoor storage. Composite materials have come a long way in recent years. For this update the family selected TimberTech decking to build the floors and rail caps. The railings are stained wood with black pickets and provide the necessary safety without compromising the view to the water and trees.
