Screened Porch and Deck Combo in Macon GA’s Historic District

Archadeck of Central Georgia was called on by these Macon homeowners to upgrade their existing wooden deck to create an attractive and more usable outdoor living space.

These homeowners wished for an outdoor living area, which offered privacy and protection from the elements by way of a screened porch.  Their existing wooden deck was aged, and structurally unable to facilitate the weight of a roof and walls for screening, so we replaced the entire structure to suit today’s building codes.

One of the many benefits of hiring Archadeck of Central Georgia to be your outdoor living builder, is that we can identify and correct challenges in building.  This home in the historic district of Macon, was built in the 1920’s.  There was a challenge in that the brick was separating from the home.  After tearing down the old deck, the homeowner fixed the brick, so we could make the proper home connection with the new porch and deck.  The home’s existing overhang also required a new post and beam system, which we installed.  We also faced a difficult roof connection, which we were able to properly address when adding the new porch roof.  The screened porch has a gable roof, which we tied into a flat roof.  To accommodate proper connection, we changed the pitch at the back of the porch, and built a hip tie-in.

One space becomes two with a screened porch and deck combination

Many of our porch clients choose to add decks for a number of reasons.  It’s not only nice to have a choice to enjoy an enclosed outdoor space, or bask in the sunshine in an open space, but it also creates an open area, where homeowners can place their grills and smokers.  This deck and screened porch combination was built with traditional pressure-treated wood.  The project also required adding a new gutter system on the porch.

Archadeck of Central GA installed a true exterior door for this screened porch, so the owner could add a doggy door.  Full metal exterior doors are more accommodating for adding pet doors!

Even though the new screened porch and deck addition were built on the same footprint of the existing deck, the space is far more accommodating and enjoyable.  Outdoor living upgrades do not have to be larger than what is already there – they must be made better.

The screened porch offers two points of exit and entry.  One goes directly to the backyard.  The other goes onto the deck, which also leads to the backyard.

This Vintage Outdoor Space in Shirley Hills Gets A New Lease on Life

Macon-Fiberon-deckIt is not very often that Archadeck of Central GA is asked to consult on a structure built as far back as the 50’s. One of our most recent outdoor living transformations took us on a blast from the past.

This project took place in Shirley Hills, which is located in Macon, Ga.  The homeowner had a poured slab concrete deck they were using as a carport. The structure was beginning to fail and had become dangerous. The original structure had been built using special  2 x 14 joists that spanned 16′.  Other materials used as part of the original carport/deck included plywood, wire and concrete. Over time the footing had begun to give away and the outside walls had started to lean.  In turn, this opened up a way for water to penetrate the integrity and the wood then began to rot. The homeowner said that the wood had been mushy for over a year.

Upon inspection, Archadeck of Central Georgia deemed the structure was no longer repairable nor salvageable due to the damage caused by Father Time and Mother Nature. We were able to use the existing steel and beam. We filled it back in with concrete and additional posts to make it structurally sound. We also repaired the old wall and stood it back up.

Deck-Macon-Fiberon

The new deck is built from Fiberon ProTect Advantage decking in gray birch. Not only does this decking look like premium hardwoods. The boards feature a three-sided PermaTech® cap layer for exceptional stain and fade resistance. The solid composite core also resists splintering, cracking and decay. In addition, the decking is backed by a 25-year warranty providing added peace of mind.

Take a look at this amazing before and after image:

We used standard wooden railing with a composite rail cap to finish off the beautiful new deck.  Archadeck of Central GA also tore out all the old screen on the porch and installed new inserts and screening.  We were able to salvage the existing doors and we rescreened these as well.

The clients are over the moon about how their project turned out. With the quality and low maintenance materials used in building the space, they are looking forward to many years of enjoyment.

This East Macon deck and pergola addition is nothing short of an outdoor oasis from every angle!

Multi-angled deck and pergola in Nottingham by Archadeck of Central GA
Our recent deck and pergola addition in east Macon is built with a keen eye towards preserving the holistic nature of this home’s architecture.

This deck and pergola project takes us to the Nottingham community located on the East side of Macon. This area of Central GA lends itself to the very roots of Macon, and carries an air of nostalgia amid the mature landscapes and prominence of the homes located there. This particular home was built in the Frank Lloyd Wright style architecture which is based on designing structures in harmony with humanity and their environment. This is a philosophy Wright called organic architecture. This home is a prime example of combining the home with the outdoors as the surrounding property and the residence unite elegantly as one.

Nottingham East Macon GA deck and pergola project by Archadeck of Central GA
This bi-level deck design allows the decks to flow harmoniously into one another and also provides space for separate living and dining areas.

Our goal was to emphasize this union with a new deck and pergola addition for this home. The homeowner’s existing deck was showing signs of age and exposure to the weather. We began the project by tearing down the old deck so as to have a blank canvas to build a new outdoor living masterpiece. We built the new deck from pressure treated pine and later the homeowners applied a solid sealer. The homeowner also wanted the new deck design to emphasize varied angles and shapes as they did not want a typical square-shaped deck. The design we decided upon includes two decks built at two different levels. This bi-level design allows the decks to flow harmoniously into one another and also provides ample space for separate living and dining areas. The living area of the deck provides convenient access to the interior of the home to make entertaining on the new deck a breeze.

The day we photographed the space, the pergola had just been painted with red to make the pergola stand out among the lush landscape.

Within the living area of the deck, we also built a stunning wooden pergola. The pergola design is influenced by the same cues set forth by the home’s architecture and the free-flowing nature of the deck. The day we photographed the space, the pergola had just been painted with red to make the pergola stand out among the lush landscape and in keeping with the red hue used on the French doors that provide access between the deck and house.

Notice how the bi-level design allows ample space for both dining and relaxing.

These Nottingham homeowners are elated with their new outdoor living space and are looking forward to many years of organically inspired outdoor living enjoyment on their new deck. In fact, they were so happy with the outcome of the design that upon completion they referred their daughter to us for an outdoor living project she had in mind. We recently finished her project and will feature it here soon.

The charm of this front of house deck picks up right where the dirt road ends!

Macon GA Entrance Deck
Take a peek at this Macon, GA entrance deck which we are currently working on.

Today we revisit these former clients in Macon, GA. Archadeck of Central GA completed a backyard deck addition for these homeowners when they lived at a previous home. Since moving, the homeowners are ready to build a front-of-house entrance deck addition. Since the homeowners enjoy entertaining a lot, they had found themselves using the front yard often. Since their traditional ranch style home is located on a charming country gravel road, and exudes a country charm, the front yard seems a natural spot to linger while friends, family and neighbors would drop by to visit. With this in mind, Archadeck of Central GA set out to build a front-of-house deck that mimics the same “slow down and stay awhile” approach to outdoor living so prevalent in this area of Macon.

Macon GA Before the deck
This is the front of the house before we started the deck addition.

Adding to the charm of the new deck, the home already has a little covered area that is just wide enough to serve as a hallway to the front door of the home. They also have a door that comes out at the opposite end of the home. With the home’s unique features and existing traffic flow in mind, we designed the deck to run from the covered walkway area to the other side of the home where the door is located. The classic ranch style dimensions of this home make the perfect candidate for a front of house deck, as the design of a ranch home lends itself to longer dimensions than other house styles.

Since the house is built with a slab foundation, the existing walkway is still present under the deck. The new deck addition is built with pressure treated pine and features steps on the front that are built all the way across so they can be used as bench seating. We installed the decking on an angle to add visual interest. The deck also steps down to gain access to the door located at the opposite end of the entrance.

Notice how the new deck addition changes the whole look of this residence into a welcoming outdoor oasis.

This deck is still an in-progress project, but the homeowners were so excited with the deck they have already began moving their outdoor furnishings onto the completed portion of the new space. They are ecstatic about being able to use the new deck in the coming weeks as they have company coming into town to visit.

A little forward thinking on behalf of this Rivoli Rd., homeowner proves smooth sailing towards a new sunroom and deck addition by Archadeck of Central GA

Macon GA sunroom and deck
A design rendering to the left details the project while in the planning stages, as the image to the right shows the completed project.
Before project
This image depicts the existing deck and lanai before we broke ground on the new sunroom and deck addition.

Archadeck of Central Georgia just finished this beautiful deck and sunroom in the Rivoli Road area of Macon. These homeowners had been thinking of adding a sunroom to their deck for a number of years. They even planned to the extent that when upgrading their home’s existing HVAC, they built in the capacity for the new room they would be adding This decision made the sunroom addition run smoother because of the planning on the part of the homeowner.

The homeowners had a deck with a screened lanai over the top. The space was 10 years old and had met their outdoor living needs for awhile. But, they envisioned a space they could utilize year round. With their lanai, they were subjected to the weather at all times including the humidity and the pollen that go along with Macon summers! We demolished the existing deck and lanai to start from scratch.

The new space includes a sunroom with a brick wall around the bottom to match the original home’s skirting. The sunroom includes huge glass windows that use a four track system allowing the homeowners to take advantage of the view and the breeze. The 10 foot windows can be easily opened to expose 3/4 of the screen. The entire space is insulated including the two large insulated glass triangles which were placed in the gable end of the sunroom to maximize the sunlight that comes into the space.

Rivoli Rd in Macon GA sunroom interior
The sunroom’s interior features large easily functional windows and charming beadboard.

In the sunroom’s interior we finished the space using charming bead board on the interior walls and on the closed rafter ceiling. We also designed the door to swing out so as to not take up space within the sunroom. The homeowners are going to paint the interior walls the same color as their vinyl siding and they are also going to install a tile floor.

In addition to the stunning sunroom, we built a low maintenance deck attached to the space. We used Fiberon Pro-Tect decking  in gray on the new deck  which provides the perfect spot for the homeowners to grill. The existing home did not have gutters, nor did it need them in the past. In order to keep water from splashing on the new deck after it rains we installed gutters above the new deck space.

These Macon, GA homeowners are elated with their new space. This project proved the ease of transition that is possible when the homeowner plans ahead to factor in the vision of future outdoor space amendments. Much like our staged building program, certain structural amenities can be designed and engineered into your outdoor space ahead of time for future additions.
