Archadeck creates a bigger and better deck in macon!

Our recent job in Macon takes us to a property where the homeowners had initially built the deck.  Homeowner-built decks are something we see on a regular basis. The existing deck wasn’t necessarily built incorrectly, however, building codes change on a regular basis so they contacted us to take a look.

Before Archadeck of Central GA began the new redesign project.

The impetus of homeowner’s scheduling a design consultation with Archadeck of Central GA was to enhance their outdoor living space. Not only did they want a bigger deck, they wanted a better deck too!

One of the main obstacles we had to address was the home’s existing water line. The water line lays under the area where the deck is placed. In addition, the original deck substructure was built using blocks with no footings. We had to make sure the new deck was built in such a way that delivered strength to support the new decking, but also one that did not infringe on the water lines present in the area.

 Low Maintenance and More Space!

Archaeck of Central GA put together a deck re-design that included bigger stairs across the front of the structure to open up the view.  We wanted to retain the visibility into the backyard looking into deck from within the home. Where railing once obstructed the view, we opened that up with larger, sweeping stairs that can double as seating.

Another element we addressed was making the deck level (flush) with the home. Before, the homeowners had to step down iinto the deck from the sliding doors. We redesigned the new deck to make sure you could easily flow from home-to-deck without having to step down.

Along with the larger footprint and structural updates, we makde sure the new decking would require as little maintenance and worry to keep it looking the part.  Archadeck used low maintenance Fiberon Good Life decking in the color called  Escapes Beach House. This decking delivers durability, beauty and longevity over pressure treated wooden decks.  It will not crack, splinter or decay and the 3-sided capped layer will resist staining and fading over time.

The new deck offers more room and less maintenance!

We also used black Fortress iron pickets along with a Fiberon rail cap that matches the deck to finish off the deck perfectly.  The homeowners are elated with their new deck as it is lower maintenance, easy to clean and adds drama to their backyard gatherings.

Our recent screened porch and deck combination in Westchester is farmhouse fabulous, and functional!

Westchester Subd. Macon GA porch builders
This screened porch and deck combination located within the Westchester subdivision of Macon is farmhouse fabulous, and functional!

These Macon homeowners heard about Archadeck of Central GA from one of their friends who was also a former client of ours. They had seen our work and were impressed so they contacted us to consult about a screened porch addition they had in mind. Following the completion of some interior remodeling, they contacted us to clarify the design and begin the addition.

Home for the holidays with Archadeck of Central GA screened porches
These Westchester homeowners are ready to enjoy their new screened porch for the holidays!

The homeowners had been anticipating the porch addition for a long time.  As part of their long-term planning, they had compiled many pictures and lots of ideas about how they wanted the design to look. Archadeck of Central GA used these valuable tools to not only give them the porch of their dreams, but we were able to show the homeowners ways to accomplish their goals less expensively. The homeowners also had an interior designer which we worked with closely on this project.

When we began the porch addition, there was an existing deck we really wanted to utilize for the new porch. We were able to utilize the existing deck space and make it even better — by adding to the deck and making it one foot larger out from the house. In addition to expanding their existing deck, we also added a deck off the side of the screened porch that is the ideal amount of space for the homeowner’s grill. The floor and stairs of the deck were built using low-maintenance TimberTech Earthwood Evolutions Tropical  in Pacific Rosewood.

Here is a view of the screened porch & deck combination in it’s entirety.

There are quite a few unique elements involved in this particular project. One is the farmhouse inspired, cross bunk design chosen for the railing. These are evident as the large cross X’s. In order to achieve the look intended, we had to make sure the panels were evenly spaced to ensure the X’s are all evenly sized. The Macon homeowners also had special wooden doors made to mimic the cross bunk design used in the panels.

The home owners originally wanted a flat ceiling on the porch. However, we showed how a closed rafter ceiling would be less expensive and provide more height with a sloped ceiling. Making the choice of the sloped closed rafter ceiling also ensured no encroachment into second story windows and made it possible to mimic the high ceilings found inside the house. They also wanted plank ceilings used on the interior of the screened porch to give the space a more rustic, old-time look. Again we were able to help the homeowners choose a more cost effective alternative by using beadboard which comes in a large sheets rather than individual pieces.”

Notice the unique, farmhouse inspired, cross bunk design used on the screened porch railing and door.

We used various columns on the screened porch to give the space more character. The pressure treated square columns were hollowed out on the inside so we could run electrical wiring inconspicuously. We used large 8 x 8 columns on the exterior and 6 x 6 columns on the interior. Although we placed composite flooring on the deck, we used standard pressure-treated wood flooring for the screened porch. Since the porch floor dwells within a protected space that doesn’t encounter sun or rain, we agreed composite was not necessary inside the porch. The homeowner plans to stain the wood in the spring to match the Rosewood color of the composite. We cannot wait to see the completed space.

These Westchester homeowners couldn’t be happier with their new screened porch and deck space. It serves as  a perfect place for enjoying nature. They’ve even assembled their holiday tree within the space to enjoy during the holidays!

Archadeck of Central GA is now offering Fiberon Pro-Tect

Fiberon Deck in Macon GA
Fiberon is one of our top picks for low maintenance decking options,

As an outdoor structure expert we are dedicated to ensuring the products we use on all our outdoor structures meet or exceed our quality standards. In the low-maintenance decking options, there have been a couple of generations of growth and enhancements. When these products first came out, they generally included a combination of plastic and wood fibers – thus the composite name. The next generation of synthetic outdoor building products were solid plastic products which provided greater performance and stronger warranties. In an effort to offer customers the best of both worlds, synthetic companies now offer what is called capstock or wrapped product. This product has a composite core but is wrapped with PVC. This lowers the cost while maintaining the performance of a PVC product.

We are now offering Fiberon Pro -Tect decking to our central GA Archadeck customers. Pro-Tect is a capstock composite made by Fiberon. Fiberon’s Pro-Tect is different because it uses a unique manufacturing process which produces a great looking product that mimics the look of real wood. Pro-Tect is wrapped on 3 sides (traditionally 4 sides are wrapped) and provides superior low-maintenance attributes at a competitive price.

When you are comparing the price difference between composite and capstock there is not a huge price difference. When you move from capstock decking to PVC there is a significant price difference. The only drawback to solid PVC is the aesthetic. Many homeowners feel that solid PVC decking looks too artificial to suit their tastes. capstock takes the best of both worlds from composite and PVC and mingles them together.

Pro-Tect looks great. Many happy customers have concluded that Pro-Tect doesn’t look like plastic. This new line comes in five rich, fade resistant colors that require no staining or painting. Pro-Tect has 3 colors that we offer here in Central GA – Chestnut, Gray Birch and Western Cedar. The color choice works well with a wide range of settings and complements a myriad of color schemes in your outdoor space. Pro-Tect’s product line also includes rail caps and steps. Pro-Tect is backed by a 20-year, limited warranty for stain and fade protection. Pro-Tect also resists mold and mildew. The quality and price point of Pro-Tect means more homeowners can enjoy the benefits of real, low-maintenance decking.
