The weathered red patina of the old deck provided a beautiful contrast to the landscape of surrounding green trees and foliage, but that was about it.
The backyard deck structure which surrounded the house was no longer accessible and usable, so it needed to be torn down.
After The Tear Down, A Beautiful New Deck Is Born
This deck transformation was more than just a deck replacement, it was a rethinking and reimagining of the structure. Whereas the original deck was only 8 feet deep, the new one was designed to extend 4 feet further out to be more practical and functional.
As we removed the original 8-foot deck structure, our team members also discovered that the house band outside the home was rotten and also needed to be replaced. Of course, we fixed it. That’s what proactive, true professional outdoor living space builders do. It’s part of our DNA. It turns out that the rot damage occurred because the home exterior that abutted the deck was not flashed properly – hence the problem.
Fixing Old Deck Problems With Creative Thinking And New Outdoor Building Materials
Now that we figured out what the problem areas were and what solutions were needed, it came time for this outdoor contractor to rethink the design and outlay of the new deck.
By increasing the footprint from the original 8 feet to a new and improved 12 feet, outdoor living furniture could finally be placed in various conversation areas around the home exterior.
The outdoor built-in deck bench, which became a cumbersome obstacle at times for entertaining, was removed. In its stead, we replaced it with a beautiful two-tone protective railing comprised of pressure-treated wood with black metal pickets. Topping it all, now stands a drink rail cap crafted from composite decking material for durability and low maintenance.
With A Lake Overlook, Two Sets Of Stairs Are Better Then One
Once outdoors, the family also wanted to create an easier passage to the deck from the backyard landscape so we added a second staircase. This new two-staircase configuration made much more sense as the expanded wraparound deck welcomed more traffic flow and increased functionality.
